Trading in the traffic

This is such a ubiquitous site in African countries. There’s no real social safety net so selling along the road and running the gauntlet with the motorbikes that weave through the stationary traffic is a way to earn a few Tanzanian Schillings: kids shoes, quartered apples, plastic wash bowls, clothing, phone charging cords, red traffic warning triangles, bags of nuts, a foot long serrated knife, and a selection of self-help books including one titled ‘Managing your Emotions’.

  1. What a vivid snapshot—you’ve captured it so well I can almost hear the traffic and feel the heat rising off the road. It’s both heart-wrenching and deeply humbling, isn’t it? That hustle, the ingenuity, the resilience… selling everything from apples to emotional survival. ‘Managing your Emotions’ feels both ironic and perfectly placed in that scene.
It actually reminds me of the good old China in the 1980s—no rules, a kind of raw, unfiltered freedom. You’d never be allowed to do that now.
Thanks for sharing this—it really makes me pause and appreciate what people do to get by each day.
Stay safe and keep those reflections coming—I’m loving every bit of your journey.
    Warmly,
