Powdering the parts

This video follows from the previous blog. Elephant exits from scene where Chilojo Cliffs towers over the Runde River, and approaches the bank where humans are sitting quietly in the ‘wings’ … so to speak. We’d just moved from a picnic spot where a group was enjoying a raucous BBQ and were feeling that some quieter observation might be a good approach. After pausing under a shady tree, the elephant walked up the bank just metres from where we were sitting. It headed for what was probably a favourite tree, giving its body a good rub against the rough bark. Then onto some powdering … a little bit under the ears, and a bit more here and there. When satisfied, he just wandered off. Show over.

(Apologies about my poor videoing skills)

  1. What a captivating moment! It must have been incredible to witness such a majestic creature up close. The transition from the lively BBQ to the serene observation, culminating in the elephant’s tranquil yet purposeful movements, is beautifully described. Nature’s theater at its finest—thank you for sharing this unforgettable experience.Just wonder why do elephants powder themselves ? Sucking powder wouldn’t be good for lung ?

    1. Your Q made me do some searching. I’m not sure if they take dust into their lungs. But dust baths help with sun protection & skin care. The fact they have 40,000 muscles in their trunk, which probably means they enough control to not breathe in the dust. Extraordinary! xkx
