So dry …

Wet winters are the norm in southern Australia, but here winter is dry. And in the Kalahari it is really dry, with the dryness extending into Spring. So dry you can almost hear the moisture being sucked out of your skin. So dry that the ground repels any moisture that you try to offer it. So dry that there is a perpetual haze of dust motes hanging in the air. The vast pans that dot the desert parks have a while to wait until they receive some water. Yet, life abounds in this dryness, and wherever you stop on some out of the way road you find the tracks of large or small creatures. Not masses of tracks all in one place, but at least evidence of one or two creatures that find ways to manage the dryness. One such is the oryx, which is renown for its striking markings and dramatic horns and also its ability to derive moisture from the roots of particular plants. Fortunately for us, Clancy can carry more than 100L of water to ease our passage through this dry terrain.

    1. I am mostly getting work done. It is hard to stay at the desk when there’s so many interesting things to see. We’re keeping safe, don’t you worry. xkx
