Kaa camp’s cleaners

Just like Mabuasehube had a set of characters that picked through our meagre food scraps, so too at Kaa camp. A group of Cape starlings squabbled among themselves for the chance to peck at a sandy apple core. Their impossibly iridescent feathers shimmering through blue, green and purple as they moved under the bright sun. Seen face on, their accusing red eyes seemed to make statements of complaint about the disappointing offerings. In contrast, a loan black-backed jackal sloped gingerly around the camp on delicate, slim legs. A wannabe scrounger, venturing close when you turned your back but finding nothing of sufficient interest to satiate its hunger.

  1. We have been watching starlings too… No pics as they are too quick for me but they are feeding on lovely ripe blackberries, they pick them of the bushes then drop down to the ground to finish eating. When you wander down the road there are lots of purple splashes where they have been.
