Here’s a few examples of how people get by. The first, a young man selling his bananas in Bulawayo’s centre. With his cart stationed outside a large government office building, he did a steady trade: albeit with the requisite amount of haggling. His bananas cost 0.5 Zim dollar, which when I bought them equated to roughly AU$0.15 per banana. Great for me … but not a lucrative business. Especially considering that, given the fluctuating Zim dollar, each banana would now be worth about AU$0.8 … if he was selling it at the same price. The young housekeeper where I’m staying has professed an interest in the clothes business, and on a taxi ride into town another young women expressed interest in the same. The second photo is just one shot of a large outdoor market with immense piles of clothes: from Zambia, from Botswana and from South Africa. It doesn’t seem to make sense to swell the ranks of clothes traders at the border crossings. But young Zimbabweans are resourceful and there must be enough in this trade to get by. I really should insert a couple of ‘just’s in that sentence. I’ll let you place them. No small amount of goods seems too small to be worth trying, but some small amounts bring a tear to your eye. Witness the snoozing man in the warm afternoon sun: a few bags of snacks and popcorn is worth the effort to sit outside the museum for who knows how long to return home with a little extra coinage weighing down your pocket. Just three ways of getting by.
I think I would have trouble walking by…..your comment earlier from the lady, ‘all countries have their problem’s when thinking in the context of B. Johnson nothing compared to this….we have water, electricity, when we want and far more than we need on our plates like those at the top of the tree in Z. ☺ inequalities are at the centre of what I do and these both on an individual and between countries levels are so unjust in the 21st C…. X
after reading the ways to getting by with Dwayne…we just feel how lucky we are ..thanks for sharing Karen and Happy Birthday have a fabulous day lovexxx
What great work ethic pity so many young people here don’t realise how well off they are 🤬
You’re partly right. But I would extend it to most of us of all ages not always realising how lucky we are. I hope you’re enjoying being at home. 🙂
Happy Birthday for the 26th Karen, hope you had a special day in a different country. xxx
