Porto’s azulejos

Decorative tiles depict all manner of events and periods on Porto’s churches and in the Pinhao railway station. The scenes span the centuries and showcase epic battles, triumphant kings, vanquished foes pledging allegiance, roman maidens lying languidly in their wagons, and idyllic rural settings. Eateries such as the Steak ‘n Shake have a contemporary take on the azulejos art form, which looks gaudy lined up with the earlier styles but provides an amazing splash of colour in an otherwise plain streetscape.

  1. Portugal was new for me too! Lots more to see and know. I liked the blue and white tiles also. It was nice to see some contemporary tiling but design of the large-scale ‘paintings’ are quite spectacular. The 2 places we visited were really nice, particularly Coimbra. I did a nice little 25km paddle down the Mondego River as well. xkx
