The weather is what the weather is when you visit a new place. You accept it and you enjoy the particular ambience that it creates. My visit to Matopos featured its capital letter: mizzle, mist and mysteriousness. Apparently, wet weather is less common in Matopos and whilst it’s not helpful for photography, it allows for different experiences. The mizzly weather dulled and contracted the landscape rendering distant rocky outcrops muted or invisible: perfect for the mysterious ancient spirit called Mlimo to jump around the rocks unseen. Moisture-grabbing, pudgy, grey lichen carpeted the domed whale backs (amadwala) making walking treacherous and delicate. From our lodge and lofty vantage point we could watch the early morning mist hover over the lake with tentacles of moisture creeping wraith-like through the valley. At first light, an unseen baboon broke the silence and grunted loudly and abruptly into the valley. Its call reverberated off the granite and, perhaps, surprised the baboon itself.
Lucky lucky girl, creating great memories…. Looking forward to seeing the whole albumxxxx
