Foncebadon

I am now a few days past the Meseta (the high plains) and the route to Foncebadon saw me climbing into mountainous country. This has come as a great relief as either side of Leon the Camino closely follows several major highways and it has been noisy and disquieting. So the day climbing to Foncebadon (at ~1450m) was much more enjoyable. At some stage this village has been virtually abandoned and many houses are in ruins. But old homes are being renovated to become hostels for Camino walkers. As I left Foncebadon the next morning, the low clouds hung like mist around the village and it was very atmospheric. A few amber lights gleamed the presence of awakened inhabitants and occasional flashes of white light in the surrounding hills were all that could be seen of lines of wind turbines. Unseen through the mist, cow bells rang out from the as yet unreleased herd. A lovely start to a day in the hills.

  1. We’ve been following your progress on our large scale map, though some of the places named, including Foncebadon, must be just too small to be shown. But it does show the hugh distance covered all by placing one step after another. Immense. I can see how pleasant it would be to be once again seeing some GREEN around you, even through the mist.

    1. Yes. Slowly, slowly the kilometres are adding up. About 200 to go. We had walked for a few days walked by busy roads. So the mountain route felt like going for a bush walk.

  2. Hi there, just catching up we have been of line the last few days doing a little walking ourselves. Up inthe Lakes a little wetter me thinks than your walk. Tipping it down all day today… up in Great Langdale but still stunning scenery and we had a lovely rainbow over the end of the valley first thing. Keep those feet moving forward thinking of you as we walk along. Lee & spence xx

    1. We’ve had a little rain but have extremely lucky so far. Cloudy, cool days have been perfect for walking. Your walk sounds nice – plus bonus rainbow. Have done about 570 kms so about 200 to go. Walking feels good at the moment. Still need to be careful not to overdo the distance with my troublesome heels. But pretty comfortable right now. Averaging 22-25 kms a day. Another big climb to ~1400m over the next 2 days. Have been back in some lovely mountain scenery and pretty villages. All good. xkx
