Villafranca Montes de Oca

I have stayed in many interesting and lovely hostels on the Camino but the one pictured here (Albergue San Anton Abad) had the most up market feel. It was an old hospital coverted into a hotel and restaurant but as the owner had previously walked the Camino he had allowed space for a pilgrim hostel as well. Many hostels offer a ‘Menu Pelegrino’: a basic three course meal for about ten euros. Our meal and eating area were slightly more fancy than usual in the ‘Abad’: though we still had a dinner table with a diversity of nationalities. This night we were Irish, Finnish, British, Canadian and Welsh-Australian. The previous night’s mix was a Ukranian now living in Canada, a Hungarian, two South Koreans (possibly the most common nationality on the Camino) and a Spaniard with smile lines as long as the Camino itself. Every night’s dinner offers a different serve of nationalities. Conversations are a mix of languages and topics but always generous in spirit and a highlight of the day.
