All good things come to an end and my trip around Western Australia is no exception. At the South Australia-Western Australia border you’re given a straightforward, black and white, no nonsense visual cue that you’re exiting the state. But “thank you for calling”? Charming and amusing: however, even small towns can muster a “Thank you for visiting our town, please visit again” in an attractive curly script with maybe a nice pattern as an accompaniment to reinforce the sincerity of the message. Enough of the pickiness! My Western Australian trip has been fabulous. Plenty of good things have been enjoyed and left behind: numerous beautiful kayaking rivers; the whitest sandy beaches with aqua marine waters; generous, caring and fun people; amazing wildflowers even at the tail end of the season; stunning scenery that you can have mostly to yourself; and a marvellous hot chocolate barista who is, hopefully, only temporarily left behind while he enjoys his own solo adventures around the fishing spots of the WA coast. I take away many good memories and experiences and, all being well, there will be future trips to ‘mop up’ the places I couldn’t get to in my 2014/15 and 2015/16 trips: almost a years worth of travel and still not enough time! And by the way, the border quarantine message is about food stuffs and not about the individual and whether they’re still carrying insects in their ears that are unwanted in South Australia. “Please inspector, I’m sure if wasn’t a fruit fly and anyway it drowned in olive oil and was extracted at Esperance Emergency.”
I took that same photo today as I left and I thought it strange to say Thank you for calling! Calling? Sounds like we just popped in!! It takes nearly 2 days to get from that sign to the first little town at Norseman!! That’s a bit more than ‘calling in’ !! I loved every bit of WA and it sounds like you have too. Happy travels.
I only just saw your reply to my other blog this evening. We maybe even passed or stopped for fuel in the same places! I’ve been scooting along as I have to get back to work. Bummer. Already planning the next trip but it won’t be WA again next year. Though there’s plenty more to see and you’re right, I’ve loved it.
Let me know your movements – it would be nice if we could fit in a catch up before you head further east. I’ll understand if things are too tight – I know how it gets.
