It was a relief on several levels to step into Changi airport’s butterfly house. To enjoy the flitting beauty of butterflies such as Singapore’s iconic rose, and find some reprieve from shops lined with designer handbags and temptations to eat, eat and eat some more. But a somewhat surprising relief was to be able to simply enjoy butterflies: things of loveliness and willing workers in our gardens … usually. For the past two years a relentless battle has raged in my caper patch. Capers are tough plants with thick leathery leaves and woody stems, but are no match for the grubs of the caper butterfly that would foolishly eat itself out of house and home. Greg has been part of the battle and has commissioned an AI generated caper tune that you might enjoy: https://suno.com/song/dcb15453-1679-444b-ade9-7cb01b53b3a7 Fortunately, all my butterfly animosity could be set aside in Changi where exotic blazes of colour supped peacefully on nectar and were oblivious to my presence.
