Alternatively known as Mountain of the Gods and deeply spiritual to the locals, Tsodilo Hills are Botswana’s highest group of hills. The area is home to a significant body of rock art (>4,500 paintings), which you get a small taste of on a guided walk. Why am I surprised that you need to go on a guided walk because the art and wonderful baobab trees need protecting from visitors? Happens the world over and enough said. The art site has a little of the feel of Uluru: both large rock outcrops that rise abruptly from flat plains and the aura of somewhere special. The art is somewhat enigmatic as it has proved difficult to date, is potentially attributed to a group of San and Bantu, but does not fit typical styles found across other African art sites. In comparison, it is monochrome and lacks the subtle brush strokes that give other San art a 3-D appearance. But definitely still worth seeing and the scenery was equally interesting …. see next post.
