Something was moving about on a dead tree in the distance. Closer inspection revealed a pair of ground squirrels, which kept darting around the trunk and disappearing. They’d appeared and disappeared several times until I realised they were hiding in a couple of knurled hollows on the other side of the trunk. The game of now-you-see-me-now-you-don’t continued while they were in turns curious and nervous. So cute and entertaining. Eventually I left them in peace, taking my camera off to hunt birds instead.
