Ingredients for digital nomading

Working on the road can work in remote locations. But the primary ingredient has been having a travelling companion who knows and loves gadgets … I mean really loves them, can make them (first photo power pack in the making), and has a Plan B, C and possibly even a D option to cover all bases. Before we started this trip, I said I could only join in if I could work on the road, and Greg seemed to readily accept this and the tech challenge it posed. That said, I do also suspect he relished the chance to acquire and pack more gadgets into our already overloaded flight luggage. Two such ingredients are a Starlink dish for internet access and a foldable set of solar panels to boost Clancy’s existing solar array and provide requisite power for the dish. Let’s move inside to the office where there’s no shirking on OH&S workplace principles to support a full day’s work: a box for storing the sacred work laptop and elevating it to eye level; and a separate keyboard and booster cushions to fine tune my body’s positioning. Off to the right, there’s the all crucial power pack for the laptop (in its protective banana box), which was built specially to carry and transform the solar energy via Clancy’s 12V power system and into my thirsty laptop. Greg’s home built power pack was not entirely straight forward as my laptop has an unusually high voltage requirement (note to self for next purchase), and an unusual plug that required an extra adaptor (another note to self for next purchase). The outcome from all this clever gadgetry is sufficient power for a full day in the office. Additional comforts include a heater, and my camera and binoculars, which are positioned close to hand to scrutinise any wildlife that strays across the office view. It is another OH&S requirement to divert one’s gaze from the laptop every now and then. A cup of rooibos with fresh ginger to keep the thinking sharp completes the set up. The final ingredient is motivation … not something that Greg can fix and I’ll admit it can be struggle when there’s a world of newness just a short step outside the office.
