Morning mist catchers

This morning the desert ash woke in surprise to find that it had a new coat. Not a green coat of leaf buds in anticipation of spring; rather, delicate threads of labour from the local spider population, which were back lit and starkly exposed by the early morning sun. A host of traditionally-shaped cob webs breathed gently in the breeze, pulsating with the rhythm and movement of a skeletal and tentacle-free jelly fish. Lower down on the trunk a dense criss-crossing of webbing revealed the energetic and renegade style of a free form spider. All artists were absent from their installations: perhaps camera shy or exhausted from their collective efforts? More likely they were hiding in the nooks and crannies of the ash’s crusty bark, allowing their prey the opportunity to select at leisure from the seemingly innocent array of mist catchers. At some point during the day—when I was otherwise focused on my computer screen—the webs were reclaimed for recycling in some future spinning frenzy.
