Along the Camino there are Municipal hostels in most towns. These usually accomodate large numbers of peregrinos in dormitories, are provided at a very modest cost (~5€) and are managed by volunteers. They are another example of the work done by many people to provide services for peregrinos on the Camino: our ‘work’ of walking is the tip of the iceberg and the behind the scenes activity to support walkers is quite humbling. Many of the Municipal hostels are in old buildings and the Albergue de Cacabelos is no exception though its layout is a little unusual. Rooms with two beds (fabulously luxurious and not the norm) are set out in a semi-circle in a courtyard surrounding an old church. A bed, a hot shower and somewhere safe and quiet for the night. What else do you need? And all for 5€.
