Camino markers

The Camino Frances is a seriously well-marked route. The care and attention paid to ensuring that pelegrinos (including day dreamers like me) don’t get lost is quite astounding. The markers take a number of forms and sometimes vary from one province to another. In cities, as in Leon, the markers go ‘ up market’ and are a brass scallop shell fixed to the pavement. But always there are painted yellow arrows at every twist and turn where you need to make a decision: on the edge of kerbs; pointing across a pedestrian crossing; on the upright posts of road signs; on the side of buildings; and ones that are not essential but function to provide some reassurance when you haven’t seen an arrow for a while. You may recall that I went astray for a few kilometres on my first day on an alternative route that was less well-marked. However, for the past three weeks these yellow friends haven’t failed in their duty and my eyes are always searching for their next advice. I am sure that in the future, on some walking track far from the Camino, I will momentarily forget where I am and I will look hopefully for a small yellow arrow to guide me on my way.
