Najera

Of course, churches and monasteries have been a feature of the Camino with many having beautiful, densely decorated and gilded baroque altars. In Najera went to both the church and the monastery. I visited the former to light a candle to celebrate my niece’s 21st. I was hoping for a real candle to create an atmospheric photo but 20 cents deposited in the requisite slot lit up two small electric candles. Not quite what I had in mind but pelgrinos can’t be chosers. The photo is of the Monastery Santa Maria la Real, which was important as part of the establishment of the Spanish kingdoms in medieval times and, hence, also important for the Camino. The churches are often the centre piece of a town with the Camino leading you to their door.
