Roncevalles

There are plenty of photos I could have picked for today’s blog: the mist hanging over St Jean as I left the town, rustic shots of timber gates dripping with moss, stone huts being reclaimed by the forest, the rushing river that accompanied me all day or high-sided valley views. But I have picked the Roncevalle Monastery with belled-cows grazing: I was so damned pleased to see my resting place for the night after nearly 30kms walking. I had planned to stop at Valcaros (13kms) but I was feeling good, the town was very small and a snarl and snap from a dog sent me scuttling through. A missed turn (eyes down for bingo but all over the place for Camino markers) added another ~4kms to what should have been 25kms. Body seems to have mostly survived the test and it was a good day with some lovely scenery.
