Lilies of Lily Creek Lagoon

The photos speak for themselves: the breathtaking beauty of lilies lit by the early morning sun and the unexpected delight of the purple underbelly of the glossy green lily pads. Much harder to capture are the flashes of azure, crimson and emerald green that belong to the azure kingfisher, comb crested jacana and green pygmy goose, respectively. These birds are readily seen on Lily Creek Lagoon but not so readily photographed. The jacana’s are particularly entertaining to watch with bambi-like legs bracing to maintain balance, oversized feet spreading their weight over the lily pads and their comb flashing like a beacon when the sun’s rays catch it side on. Despite splayed legs and the large feet, the jacanas gradually sink to their thighs in the water until they are forced to move to the next lily pad. Bird watching by kayak is great for a stealthy approach but also good practice for steady, subtle paddling and trying to stay in the same spot without rotating. Tricky but fun. The added complexity of paddling to position correctly for bird photography is yet to be mastered!
