The first photo doesn’t do the sunset justice, as the view over Cambridge Sound from the Five Rivers Lookout is way too expansive to capture well on my camera. Pixie, from Wyndham Port, assured me that this lookout – sitting high above her shop – was in the top five in the world. I’m too polite to challenge this claim but would suggest a small tweak of the name to better reflect some key features of interest. The view encompasses the entry of five major Kimberley rivers into the sound – King, Pentecost, Durack, Ord and Forrest. More importantly and overlooked, is the modestly-sized Parry Creek, squeezing in and claiming its own outlet nestled close to the better known Ord River. Perhaps a renaming of the lookout is in order? ‘Five Rivers and a Parry’ is what I would suggest. The locals encourage that the sunset at the lookout is must-see but Wyndham can throw out a beautiful pink, mauve and apricot spangled sky at sunrise too: a perfect vista while awaiting the arrival of Gouldian Finches … (see next post).
