Rainbow rocks

The ochre pits of the West MacDonnell Ranges provide a palette of beautiful chalky colours for the eyes of lucky, passer-by, white fellas to feast upon. Upended at some distant point in time and now a rock face alongside a creek, the ochre options are presented as a purposefully-arranged catalogue for perusal and selection by the locals. Ochre collection was, and is, men’s work: for men’s business, women’s business, ceremonies or medicinal purposes. Imagine the early morning campfire chitty chat from tens of thousands of years ago. “If you’re going out today, dear, I could do with some more ochre”. “What colour do you need?” he might have asked. “Purple, of course”.
