This is the real thing. A 1899 bicycle made by Mulga Bill. Just having the name Mulga Bill should be enough to secure your status as a legend but he also has a claim to fame for making and riding this bicycle for several hundreds of kilometres around the Western Australian goldfields. Ouch, you might be saying. This fine machine comprised: mulga and old boxes for the forks and wheels, old meat tins for tyres and a bullock hide chain. The museum’s information about the bicycle notes that it was “not a racing machine” and that the speed attained was not great. Not surprising, but you’ve got to admire the ingenuity and pluck of the man. It remains unclear as to whether Mulga Bill ever arrived at a site in time to peg a claim, but his memory peddles on in Kalgoorlie’s museum.
