If you haven’t seen this movie then you must. And, for me, it was an extra treat to watch it at Broome’s Sun Pictures cinema: proudly signed ‘the World’s oldest operating picture gardens’. Whilst waiting for the film to start you can take in the ambience (bit pompous?) of the cinema: corrugated iron walls, open timber roof trusses, deck chairs for seating, old movie posters and commercial jets exiting stage right of cinema screen. The local atmospherics – light planes continuing to land throughout the movie, trees gently draping the sides of the screen and fruit bats flitting across David Gulpilil’s face – all added to the experience, rather than detracting. I really enjoyed this movie: the pace, the minimalist soundtrack, the ironies and challenges, the humour and, of course, Gulpilil’s performance. Words to this effect … “Charlie, you need to look after yourself and eat well”, said doctor. Eat well … “On white fella crap food?”, said Charlie. So many really good messages.
