Windjana Gorge

We stayed a couple of nights here. You’ll see why. The colours in the rocks are gorgeous and the night time breeze, gently alternating between hot and cool, was strange to experience. If you want to see fresh water crocodiles then this is the place to come. In the pool near the gorge entrance, I counted more than 50 freshies: there’s supposed to be a mob of about 70. The pool is not huge. There’s no way the crocs can get away from the ones they don’t like and even your best mates would be getting on your nerves. And then there are the tourists who want to ogle at you when it’s time to get on with the nights feeding. Food also might be getting a little scarce: not sure if this accounts for the missing limb on one croc. The pool and it’s inhabitants were crying out “bring on the wet, I need some space”. The Windjana experiences also included a fossilised nautiloids *, a large colony of black flying foxes and a special moment of hearing a crack, a splash and seeing a croc appear with a bat arm sticking out of its mouth. I did the tourist ‘step forward whilst reaching for camera’ move but the croc disappeared silently and swiftly beneath the surface, like they are won’t to do. And of course there were lots of birds, but Janet has the list for them. * I just re-read the brochure. Oops, just the one.
