Termite mounds

This post is for Vibeke. I wish I’d been more assiduous in recording the changing colour, shape, size and overall finish of the numerous termite mounds that I’ve seen on the trip. This post has a small selection: dark red bobbly ones from around Halls Creek, triangular shapes on Point Torment and undercut shapes along the western part of the Gibb River Road. The Halls Creek mounds are made by spinifex termites. It’s amazing what spinifex resin plus termite excreta can produce with some mounds having very human like forms: man disappearing into mound, family huddled together and single figures just hanging around hoping to get a hug: yes, this one is a little staged and I needed to put more umph into the pose! I just know Vibeke would want one of the humanoid styles. Trip next year Vibeke?

  1. Did you see the termite mounds along the highway around Katherine that had been dressed in a variety of types of clothing? Brilliant.

    1. Sure did Ali. They were all along the stuart highway from quite far south. I put a post on the blog with one of them. Under July I think. They were quite entertaining and gave you something to look forward to on the long drive!

  2. Oh my. Yes I need to go and see these. Beautiful.
    Love reading your entries.
Just go back from Canada Saturday. Whent to Florence’s birthday Sunday. 95 the old bird is, not going as strong as she use to, but still a crowd turned up.
    When did Jeanette leave?.
    Cheers vibeke

    1. Yes vibeke. You’d love these bobbly ones. You can see so many different blob people in them. But you can see the size of them. We also heard that if the mound becomes uncared for (queen & king die and are not replaced) that the surface starts to wear and is not repaired and smoothed. So transport may not mmay not be viable!
