Wyndham & Gouldians

P1030010

“There’s nothing to see in Wyndham”, someone said. We nearly believed them and were starting to reconsider the original idea of staying the night in the town. After taking in the view at the Five Rivers lookout, it was felt that it deserved a second look in the next morning. The photo doesn’t do the view justice: it’s a big view and takes in the area where the Ord, King, Durack, Penetcost and Forrest rivers join Cambridge Bay. So the view and museum were excellent but the best bit was saved for the next morning. At the camp ground we’d heard that Gouldian finches were to be found in their 100s at the council offices. So at around 6:15am we headed over. It was quiet to start with, apart from a few birders and several huge cameras, but eventually Gouldians started to arrive in flocks of ~20. These smaller flocks all joined up in one tree overlooking several small puddles left over from the previous nights watering. The finches took turns to come down for water and when replete all disappeared off. It was a magical moment and we have to thank Ian for letting us know.
